'Droid' belongs to George Lucas but what about BB8?

I used to use the word 'droid' in my comic but then discovered the word belongs to the Star Wars franchise.

I've since started using 'mec' and have been changing old pages. An example is here:

Interestingly a new droid has been created by the Star Wars guys, BB8.

Check this very old page of mine with a mec that rolls and another baring some resemblance to BB8 and mine was BE-88 or aka BEE BAA.
